5 Self Storage No-No's
Self storage is a great way to keep your items safe, secure, and organized, but it is important to understand how to utilize your storage unit properly. Not every item or activity is meant for a storage unit. Being mindful and knowledgeable about how to use your storage unit responsibly is important.

1. Do Not Try To Run a Business From a Storage Unit
Self storage units are not designed to run a business from it. It is not the same as office or retail space. Storage units are not designed for these types of activities and it will also most likely violate your storage agreement. Drive-up storage units are great for small business storage though. You can store supplies, products, and more in your storage unit as needed.
2. Don't Store Hazardous, Perishable, or Illegal Items In Your Unit
Highly flammable, toxic, moist, illegal, or perishable items are not a good idea to put in your storage unit. Ideally, items that are not temperature sensitive and do not require consistent maintenance are best for a storage unit. Clothing, papers, furniture, sporting equipment, dry goods and similar items normally store well long-term.
3. Never Leave Your Unit Unlocked
Always be sure to keep your storage unit locked and secure at all times. You do not want to lose any of your items to theft, so it is imperative to always lock your storage unit.
4. Don't Just Throw Everything In Your Unit Without Organizing It
Organization is key to proper self-storage. When you want to retrieve specific items from your storage unit, if it is disorganized, things will be very difficult to locate. Be sure to organize and label items so that you can easily find what you need when you need it. You will want to arrange items so that you can walk through your unit to access all the items inside.
5. Don't Put Dirty or Damp Items In Storage
Before storing an item be sure it is clean and dry. Storing dirty or moist items can lead to all type of problems including, pests, mold, mildew, and degradation of the item.
