1. Clean the Interior and Exterior of Your Car
Before storing your car, be sure to thoroughly clean the interior and exterior of your vehicle. Sap, debris, mud, dead bugs, and bird droppings can cause significant damage to your car’s paint if it is left sitting on your vehicle for too long. Also, leaving trash, crumbs, and garbage inside your car can cause odors and attracts bugs and pests.
2. Fill Up Your Gas Tank
Filling up your gas tank is very important before storing your car. A low fuel tank can result in moisture to build up in your tank. The moisture can cause rust and other issues. You may want to add fuel stabilizer to your tank as well. The stabilizer will absorb moisture and prevent gummy buildup. Be sure to follow all the instructions carefully when adding fuel stabilizer to your car.
3. Complete an Oil Change
Change the oil in your vehicle prior to putting it in storage. Dirty oil can lead to corrosion inside the engine if your car sits for too long. You should also still keep up with oil maintenance while your car is in storage.
4. Overfill Tires
A vehicle's tires lose air when left in storage long-term. Overinflating your tires before storing your car can be beneficial. Check your tire pressure, and then add more than the recommended psi number found in your manual or on the driver’s side door panel. You may also want to periodically reposition your tires as well to help protect them.
